Group classes | AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT (ATM)

Awareness Through Movement refers to the group class element of the Feldenkrais Method. Each lesson is ~60 minutes and is offered on Zoom or in person. Through oral instruction rather than demonstration, the student discovers their own way through the lesson, uncovering habits and unlocking new sensations and experiences that can lead to profound and lasting results in mobility and freedom from injury. Lessons are always open to people of all ages and abilities, and adaptations can always be made.

ATM class most often takes place lying down, but occasionally in a sitting or standing position. There is a strong emphasis on moving slowly, easily, and staying within the range of personal comfort. ATM is perhaps different from other movement classes in that its goals are not about stretching, strengthening, relaxing, meditating, or imitating. Instead lessons are designed to engage your curiosity in yourself and to refine your innate powers of awareness. I co-teach all classes with Feldenkrais practitioner Jeffrey Wells.

Six week series: april 2 - may 9, 2024

(A)symmetry in action; a moving balance

The idea of a perfect symmetry in ourselves is a myth. While we can see a general symmetry in our structure (two arms, two legs, a midline…) there are plenty of asymmetries as well. Our heart is situated a little left of center, nestled within a two-lobed left lung across from a three-lobed right lung. Further down we have a liver on the right, a spleen and stomach leftish, not to mention the undulating 20 feet of intestines even lower. Even our seemingly symmetrical skeletal and muscular systems offer beautiful reflections of our complex, varied, and counter-symmetrical lives. Our asymmetries are what make us who we are, and many of them arise and get reinforced by how we move ourselves. Rather than try to wish away or “fix” these variations, in our upcoming Feldenkrais series we will explore how increasing awareness of our biases and differences can offer us new and improved ways of acting with our uniqueness, enhancing our sense of wholeness.

Drop in any time to our Friday morning class in the Longfellow neighborhood in Minneapolis. This class is meant for anyone who is interested in deepening their self-awareness and possibilities of action, regardless of previous experience in the Feldenkrais Method. The space will be open 10 minutes before class begins. Please arrive 5-10 minutes early, especially if you are new, to sign in and familiarize yourself with the space. Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move in—wearing layers is helpful to adjust to temperature shifts. We provide blankets to practice on and any props needed for specific lessons.
