AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT

cultivate ease and efficiency

Group classes | AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT (ATM)

Awareness Through Movement refers to the group class element of the Feldenkrais Method. Each lesson is ~60 minutes and is offered on Zoom or in person. Through oral instruction rather than demonstration, the student discovers their own way through the lesson, uncovering habits and unlocking new sensations and experiences that can lead to profound and lasting results in mobility and freedom from injury. Lessons are always open to people of all ages and abilities, and adaptations can always be made.

ATM class most often takes place lying down, but occasionally in a sitting or standing position. There is a strong emphasis on moving slowly, easily, and staying within the range of personal comfort. ATM is perhaps different from other movement classes in that its goals are not about stretching, strengthening, relaxing, meditating, or imitating. Instead lessons are designed to engage your curiosity in yourself and to refine your innate powers of awareness. I co-teach all classes with Feldenkrais practitioner Jeffrey Wells.

six week series: april 16 - may 21, 2026

the habit of desire

How do we know what we want? What governs our ability to choose? What in our organization has us acting from "should" rather than from what feels good?

These questions, though maybe not always obvious, are at the heart of Feldenkrais practice. We live in a noisy world that constantly tells us what to need, what to desire, what would make our lives better. Over time, we lose touch with a quieter, more innate sense of wanting; one that belongs to us alone.

In this six-week series, we'll focus our practice on the primary movements of flexion and folding as we slow down, dampen external noise, and attend more closely to our inner life. As we create more space to explore how sensation, habit, and choice are intertwined, perhaps we can also uncover desires that may have gone long unspoken. What emerges when we stop performing what we think we should want, and start listening for what we actually do?

head, neck, shoulders: an integrated approach

If you have ongoing neck or shoulder discomfort, or simply want greater freedom and precision in movement, this series is for you!

April 6:

Differentiation: Refining the distinct roles of neck, shoulders, ribs, and arms to reduce unnecessary effort.

May 4:

Integration: Allowing the head, spine, and shoulder girdle to coordinate as a responsive whole.

Join us for two Monday evening Feldenkrais® Awareness Through Movement workshops. We’ll explore the dynamic relationship between the head, neck, and shoulders, recognizing that while the cervical spine allows remarkable mobility, that same freedom can invite strain. The head organizes how we look, listen, and orient through our teleceptors (the eyes, ears, and sense of smell), and that outward attention directly shapes the neck and shoulders. The shoulders are designed to float and glide over the ribs and allow the arms to reach with ease; yet because the arms connect to the trunk at only two small skeletal joints, habitual muscular holding and misuse can quickly narrow mobility, which in turn can affect not only the arms, but the neck, head, and upper back as well.

As winter thaws towards spring, the tension in our shoulders, neck and head can thaw as well, releasing excess effort and rediscovering structural support. Each workshop stands alone, yet together they form a coherent progression, with each session laying the groundwork for the next.
